Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) projects are designed to foster collaboration among project participants. How well do they actually work to promote collaboration among project participants? What practical strategies can be applied to other methods of project delivery? Brown University recently completed a number of major capital projects employing IPD. Michael Guglielmo, Jr., Vice President Facilities Management at Brown University, Ron Simoneau, Executive Vice President with Shawmut Design and Construction, and architect Erik Tellander of William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc, will talk about what a successful collaborative team looks like, drawing from their extensive experience with IPD project delivery at Brown.

About Michael
Michael Guglielmo Jr. is Vice President for Facilities and Campus Operations at Brown University. With more than 33 years of experience in strategic planning, building design, and construction management, Mike Guglielmo brings a wealth of knowledge to this position. Guglielmo came to Brown as a project manager and was promoted on three separate occasions before assuming an interim leadership role in FM and now VP. He holds a Bachelors of Architecture degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. He also served the country for 20 years in the Rhode Island Air National Guard as a member of the 143rd Civil Engineering Squadron. During his Brown tenure, Guglielmo has been an integral part of creating highly collaborative environments where Brown stakeholders work together with designers, engineers, and subcontractors to develop the best project solutions while implementing over a $1 billion capital plan. He has been instrumental in the development of numerous strategic projects including the Granoff Center for Creative Arts and the Engineering Research Center, completed in 2017, utilizing the highly collaborative Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method. Guglielmo also played a vital role in the development of South Street Landing and has been recognized as an industry leader in the development of the IPD approach at Brown.
About Tony
Tony Messina is a Vice President at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company in Shelton, CT and is also the firms Retail National Leader, responsible for coordinating the efforts of over 50+ operating groups within the retail industry. Starting his career in 1997 as a project engineer after graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, his career has afforded him the opportunity to work with some of the most dynamic retail developers and consultants within the industry throughout Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and California. In 2014, Messina was named as an ICSC Leader Under 40 and is currently serving on the 2023 ICSC CenterBuild Conference Planning Committee which addresses the interests of retail real estate professionals of like disciplines within the industry and provides opportunities to share experiences, discuss best practices, raise awareness about industry developments and fosters network building. Messina is excited to join the diverse group of professionals currently contributing to this year’s AEC Leadership Conference and hopes to contribute to the conference for many more years to come.
About Ron
Ron Simoneau, LEED AP, DBIA, CM LEAN, is Executive Vice President at Shawmut Design and Construction, a national construction management firm with ten offices nationwide and $1.5 billion in annual revenue. With over 33 years of construction experience, Simoneau has spent the past 28 years at Shawmut focusing almost exclusively on utilizing innovative delivery approaches for Commercial and Education clients. As Shawmut’s national education market leader, he has developed many important long-term client relationships and has been instrumental in expanding Shawmut’s portfolio to become a Top 10 US Ranked Higher Education Builder. Simoneau’s responsibilities as Executive Vice President include strategic planning, client relationships, procuring work, operational oversight, and P&L management. His leadership style exemplifies Shawmut’s commitment to delivering exceptional client service, developing high performing teams, and leading innovation. Simoneau has been instrumental in driving Lean as well as alternative project delivery models such as Design-Build, Integrated Project Delivery, and Strategic Partnerships at Shawmut. He is a champion for these concepts, frequently speaking on them at industry conferences. Simoneau graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston where he studied architecture and construction management. He is a licensed builder in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a LEED accredited professional, DBIA certified through the Design Build Institute of America, and Lean certified through the AGC of America. He currently serves on the Presidential Board of Advisors at Roger Williams University and has served on numerous boards for other non-profit organizations.
About Erik
Erik Tellander, AIA, LEED AP, is an Associate Principal at William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc. He has had a leadership role across the firm’s projects, including Brown University Wellness Residence Hall, Brookline High School, the Foundry at Babson College, Jacobs Center Redevelopment at Northwestern University, the Hoover Institution Traitel Building at Stanford, a Student Leadership Center at Alfred State University and the Weill Concert Hall and outdoor venue at Sonoma State University. Tellander has been instrumental in expanding his office’s approach to collaborative project delivery with institutional clients. He has also worked on Master Plan and precinct projects for our office, including projects at the Carneros Inn, Stanford, Tufts and MIT. Tellander received his Masters of Architecture from University of California, Berkeley, and his B.A. from Princeton University.
